You must have Java and/or a JavaJDK installed on your computer before you can run Populus.

We suggest using OpenJDK: https://openjdk.org:443/

You can also download Java at this website but please be aware of Oracle's Java licensing requirements.

Windows

Populus has been tested on Windows XP (not recommended), Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Please ensure .jar files are associated with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). For more information on how to do this, please see this page. You may also need to re-install Java if the .jar file association does not work.

If you continue to have problems (especially in Windows 10), you can also attempt to run Populus through Command Prompt/Command Line. You will want to use the cd command (change directory) to navigate to the folder where you downloaded the Populus software. This could be Downloads or My Documents. Once you are in the correct folder in Command Line, you will want to enter this command: java -jar PopulusAll.jar  If you are in the correct folder, this should open the application. To learn more about the change directory command, please visit this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjaCgavMO18

Mac OS X

Mac OS X  users may get the error "App can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.” In order to bypass this error you will need to navigate to where you downloaded the file, right-click (or control-click) PopulusAll.jar and click Open and then Open again at the popup box. An admin password may be required to create an exception to allow the application to run. You may also open System Preferences and choose Security and Privacy. Under the General Tab, adjust the radio button under 'Allow apps downloaded from:' to be 'Anywhere.'
