Q & A with Anh Tran
Q: What was your earliest foray into leadership? Were you named most likely to rule the world in high school?
A: My earliest foray into leadership was in 7th grade. I was the representative for my class in the student council. What I remember most fondly performing were the morning announcements to the entire school over the P/A system. … I was not named the most likely to rule the world in high school. I think I was actually named the female class clown.
Q: Briefly describe some of your student leadership work at the U. What’s been the role you’ve enjoyed most?
A: I have been a part of numerous student organizations including the Dean’s Scholars Program, CBS Student Board, Fairview Volunteer Advisory Committee, and Vietnamese Student Association. Additionally and what I have enjoyed most is membership in a group called Biology Without Borders (BWB). As an officer in this group, I have learned the meaning of leadership and the characteristics that define a leader. A leader is someone who is not necessarily required to pick up the slack for others. I have learned that leaders inspire others to step out of their comfort zones to become more active members in their communities and take actions that they otherwise would not have. To see members of BWB come up with ideas and participate in the leadership role has made my experience with the group rewarding.
Q: What do you think makes a good student leader?
A: I think a good student leader is someone who is personable; someone who not only inspires others but more importantly someone who is approachable. Leaders can have great ideas but if they do not spark passion in others to work together as a team for a common cause, great ideas can be lost. Personable student leaders show compassion through engagement, an interaction that inspires members to eventually become leaders themselves.
Q: Who do you consider a great leader, in general, and why?
A: Princess Diana who was renowned for her prestigious royal status has displayed much leadership in her ability to inspire others including myself. Her assertive speaking ability and compassion for others have driven many acts of kindness to assist those in need, a feat that was dear to her heart. Despite being surrounded by numerous rumors and paparazzi, Princess Diana remained calm and patient. This displayed her ability to control a situation and lead others even during the hardest of times.
