Scholarships for incoming CBS freshmen

The CBS Freshman Scholarship is made possible by annual gifts from College of Biological Sciences’ alumni and friends. The award recognizes incoming first-year students with outstanding achievements in high school.

Robert Buck and Cheryl L. Quinn Scholarship A $1000 scholarship is provided through the generosity of Robert Buck and Cheryl L. Quinn who are both alumni of the College of Biological Sciences. Robert received his B.S. in biology in 1982 and received a Ph.D. in statistics from City University, London, in 1994. Cheryl Quinn earned a B.S. degree in biochemistry and microbiology in 1985 before going on to obtain her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Illinois in 1991. This scholarship is awarded to a promising incoming student who demonstrates high academic ability as well as financial need.

Clare and Jerome Ritter Scholarship was established for incoming freshmen to the College of Biological Sciences who show academic promise. Preference is given to students from outside the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

David Grantham Burbee Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Clark R. Burbee in 2005 to memorialize his son, David Grantham Burbee, who received his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1977. It is awarded to an incoming freshman in the College of Biological Sciences who shows academic promise, plans to major in biochemistry and has financial need.

The Denneth C. and Joan L. Dvergsten Scholarship is a one-year undergraduate freshman award established in 2005 to support promising students entering the College of Biological Sciences who have demonstrated financial need or hardship.

Dr. Venkateswarlu Pothapragada and Family Undergraduate Scholarship supports new students enrolling in the College of Biological Sciences.

Edward B. Lewis Memorial Scholarship is designated for an incoming freshman who demonstrates high academic ability and a strong interest in research. Dr. Lewis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1995 for his work on how genes control the development of organs during the early growth of an embryo. Dr. Lewis received his B.S. degree in biology from the University of Minnesota in 1939.

Kien T. Nguyen and Julie A. Warren Scholarship was established in 2006 to support an incoming College of Biological Sciences freshman who shows academic promise. Both Dr. Nguyen and Ms. Wassen were students at the University of Minnesota and value the impact of this solid foundation on their careers.

Wayne and Sadie Luchsinger Scholarship provides a $1000 scholarship to an incoming student to CBS. Wayne is a Milaca, MN native and received a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the U of M in biochemistry. Sadie Luchsinger earned a A.A. degree from the U of M.

Scholarships for continuing CBS students

Ernst C. and Lucy B. Abbe Award provides $1000 to a student who has demonstrated a high level of academic and research accomplishment in their major and the plant biological sciences. Ernst Abbe made a lasting impact on teaching, scientific research and administration at the U of M during his tenure from 1935-1974. Lucy Abbe served as a Research Associate from 1944-1947 and on the faculty at Macalester College from 1959-1965.

The CBS Annual Giving Scholarship is made possible by annual gifts from College of Biological Sciences’ alumni and friends. The award recognizes students with outstanding academic achievements and encourages them to continue their pursuit of a career in the biological sciences.

The Douglas C. Pratt Undergraduate Scholarship established by Drs. Mary Kemen and Brian Randall, is named in recognition of Professor Douglass C. Pratt, who served as a mentor to Mary Kemen while she worked in his lab as an undergraduate. It provides funding to a student with demonstrated leadership experience.

The Eloise Newcomb Pittman Scholarship honors the memory of Eloise Pittman, an alumna who graduated with degrees in botany and chemistry and went on to become a teacher. It is awarded to undergraduate women with a high level of academic achievement and interest in the field of plant biology.

The Franklin Enfield Memorial Scholarship honors the values of the late Franklin Enfield, who served on the University faculty for more than 30 years. He had an excellent reputation as an effective and dedicated teacher, both in the classroom and in the research lab. He also recognized the need to integrate more effectively the contributions oof the University into the larger community. This award recognizes a student with an interest in a career in the biological sciences outside of academia.

The Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development Scholarship is designated for a student majoring in Genetics, Cell Biology and Development, and is funded by Dr. Carl Barnes, CBS alumnus, of Denver, Colorado.

The Harold Paul Morris Scholarship was established in memory of Harold Morris, a University of Minnesota alumnus, who went on to a disinguished career in government, services and academia. This award supports students majoring in either Biochemistry or Genetics, Cell Biology and Development, and who demonstrate outstanding academic accomplishments.

The Henrietta Novy Miller Scholarship was established by biochemistry alumni, faculty, and staff to honor Henrietta Miller, who served as a department admisnistrator for nearly 40 years. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate biochemistry majors.

The Juliamarie Andreen Grilly Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Molecular Biology was established in 2006 and provides support to an undergraduate student within the College of Biological Sciences who is carrying out research in the field of molecular biology. In 1946, Grilly earned a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology (now microbiology) from the University of Minnesota. In 1947, she began working at the Laboratory as a senior technician in the Biomedical Research Laboratory doing histology, cytology and autoradiography. Her specialty became photomicrography and she won several awards from the photographers association. She retired in 1980 as a staff member in the former Life Sciences (LS) Division.

The L. M. Henderson Scholarship honors the memory of LaVell Henderson, Head of Biochemistry, and Associate Dean of the College from 1979-1984. He and his wife, Maurine, created this fund to support undergraduate students in biochemistry.

The Leon A. Snyder Award was established in 1989 in memory of Leon Snyder, Professor of Genetics and Cell Biology, by his family, students and friends. This award recognizes students with interest and success in a broad spectrum of subjects, including literature, philosophy, history, the arts, social sciences, and foreign languages, in addition to the sciences.

The Michael Loveless Memorial Scholarship honors Michael Loveless, an outstanding undergraduate student who exemplified ideals of student leadership and academics. His parents established this scholarship after his untimely death in 1987. This scholarship recognizes students who continue the aspirations and achievements of Michael Loveless by displaying excellence in academics and dedication to community service.

The Norman Kerr Memorial Scholarship honors the late Norman Kerr, Professor of Zoology (1959-1965) and Genetics and Celll Biology (1965-1995) and Associate Dean of CBS (1967-1980). This scholarships reflects his passion and dedication to education by encouraging and assisting aspiring teachers.

The Palmer Rogers Scholarship honors the dedication of Dr. Palmer Rogers to students in the microbiology program. Contributors to this fund have been many of Palmer’s former students, his colleagues in microbiology, and Dr. Palmer himself.

The Patrick Cleary Scholarship was created by Dr. Patrick Cleary to support a microbiology student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in course work.

The Richard C. Nelson Scholarship was established in memory of Richard Nelson, who received two degrees from the University of Miinnesota and went on to distinguished careers in industry and academics, including faculty positions at Northwestern University and Ohio State University. This scholarship, made possible through the generosity of his daughter, Sara Nelson Cook, supports students majoring in Biochemistry.

The Richard C. Nelson Summer Scholarship in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics is funded through an estate gift of Sara Nelson Cook. It provides support for highly motivated biochemistry majors to pursue a research project full-time in a BMBB laboratory during the summer.

The Richard S. Caldecott Award recognizes outstanding achievement in academics, leadership, and athletics. It was established in 1992 by friends, family and colleagues of Dr. Caldecott, the first dean of CBS.

The Roberta Kay Anderson Gardner Memorial Award was established in 2005 to provide support to an outstanding undergraduate student who is interested in human biology.

The Stanley Dagley Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Stanley Dagley, Regents' Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, by his friends, colleagues, and students. His research helped establish the study of microbial degradation as a rigorous biochemical discipline, and his reviews extracted and eloquently expressed the unifying first principles of the field. Those who worked under him feel they benefited greatly from his unselfish, understanding guidance of their development as experimentalists. This award recognizes a student engaged in biochemical research.

Monica Tsang and James Weatherbee Merit Scholarship in Biology provides $2500 to a full-time CBS student pursing a biology degree who has (1) demonstrated academic achievement in the math and science disciplines, (2) demonstrated rigor in course selection, (3) an articulated career path and (4) a GPA of 3.5 or better.

For classes and research at Itasca Biological Station

Details of Itasca scholarships

The David F. and Jean M. Parmelee Scholarship honors the former professor and Itasca Station Director, David F. Parmelee, and his wife Jean. Dr. Parmelee was a beloved ornithology instructor and Biology Colloquium adviser. The award supports students enrolled in courses at the Itasca Biologcial Station during the summer session.

Two (2) Denneth and Joan Dvergsten Itasca Summer Scholarships are available for the first time in summer 2007. The award supports outstanding students enrolled in field biology courses at the Itasca station during the summer session.

The Itasca Director’s Scholarship is made possible by annual gifts from College of Biological Sciences’ alumni and friends. It supports students enrolled in courses at the Itasca Biologcial Station during the summer session.

The James C. Underhill Memorial Scholarship for the Study of Natural History of $500-$1000 has been established to fund student research at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories in Itasca State Park, or for coursework at the Station during the summer field biology session. The qualities of creativity, originality, enthusiasm, and a desire to investigate interesting biological interactions will be used to evaluate research proposals and requests to enroll in classes at the Station. If necessary the following hierarchy of student status will be used for final selection: 1) high school and elementary teachers, 2) undergraduates, 3) graduates, and 4) others adding to their education in their current profession (e.g., fisheries biology, journalism, etc.). Applications will be reviewed as they are received.

Travel assistance for humanitarian service or research in the U.S. and abroad

The Murray D. Rosenberg Memorial Fund honors former College of Biological Sciences professor Murray Rosenberg and his wife, University of Minnesota professor Pearl Rosenberg. Through their gifts, and the continued support of their family and friends, the fund assists students to perform health-related research or service in underdeveloped and economically depressed regions. CBS student volunteer award

The CBS Student Volunteer Award, funded by Jane Johnson, recognizes students who have demonstrated extensive volunteerism and leadership. Applications are reviewed annually and are due on April 1. Click here for information on how to apply.
