BIOL 3610, Internship: Professional experience in biological sciences
Course information
- Matches student’s academic or career goals with opportunities in industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies
- Variable 1-6 credits, [4 credits may apply toward major]
- S/N grading
- Internships may be paid, unpaid, or stipend-based
- Position must be biology-related (in the broadest sense)
- Students may enroll multiple times
Course requirements

- Learning objectives agreed upon by student, site supervisor, and faculty instructor
- A minimum of 150 hours over at least 10 weeks in the position—the more credits the more hours are required
- Internship should not include more than 20% repetitive-type work (e.g., data entry)
- Weekly journal
- Reflective paper: an end-of-term paper evaluating the experience, achievements, and learning, and how the internship impacts career planning and goals
- Individualized additional requirements depending on the
student’s particular situation. These may include presentation
at undergraduate research symposium, research paper, feasibility
study, presentations to other classes, informational interviews
