BIOL 3610, Internship: Professional experience in biological sciences

Course information

Matches student’s academic or career goals with opportunities in industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies
Variable 1-6 credits, [4 credits may apply toward major]
S/N grading
Internships may be paid, unpaid, or stipend-based
Position must be biology-related (in the broadest sense)
Students may enroll multiple times

Learning objectives agreed upon by student, site supervisor, and faculty instructor
A minimum of 150 hours over at least 10 weeks in the position—the more credits the more hours are required
Internship should not include more than 20% repetitive-type work (e.g., data entry)
Weekly journal
Reflective paper: an end-of-term paper evaluating the experience, achievements, and learning, and how the internship impacts career planning and goals
Individualized additional requirements depending on the student’s particular situation. These may include presentation at undergraduate research symposium, research paper, feasibility study, presentations to other classes, informational interviews
