Learning abroad

“Learning abroad provides an important way for biology students to begin preparing for the challenges and opportunities of careers that are becoming increasingly global in nature." - Dean Bob Elde

Helping students incorporate a learning abroad experience into their four-year plan is a top priority for the College of Biological Sciences. The Learning Abroad Center provides a diverse array of options. Whether it’s your goal to learn about forest ecology in Costa Rica, marine biology in Australia or Denmark, health care in a developing country, or language and culture around the world, we hope you’ll join the list of CBS students who have participated in learning abroad opportunities.

The next time you visit CBS Student Services, check out our learning abroad map, see where our students have gone, and plan where you’ll make your mark on the world!

Where do CBS students go abroad?

Think you can't go abroad as a CBS Student? Think again! Over the past 5 years, CBS students have traveled to over 50 different countries to take advantage of learning abroad opportunities. These opportunities include classroom settings, volunteering, internships, and research. If you are interested in going abroad, we encourage you to talk with a CBS academic advisor to learn possible ways of incorporating a learning abroad experience into your college career.

Reflections From Abroad

CBS Reflections from Abroad allows CBS students to share stories from their adventures around the world through photos and text. Whether studying in a classroom, volunteering in a clinic, or interning in a local government office, international learning experiences can contribute to a more holistic and fulfilling college experience.

If you’re a faculty member, maybe you’ll feel inspired to encourage your students to go abroad. If you’re a student, maybe you’ll feel inspired to go abroad yourself. Regardless of your role in the university community, this event will remind you there is a world of opportunity out there.

Have you had a valuable experience abroad? Would you like to share your experiences with the CBS community? Email pjsmith@umn.edu for more information on how to participate.
