Populus 5.3 for Java on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Unix:
Populus 5.3, released on September 5, 2003, supercedes version 5.2.1 of March 2003. This major update includes six new modules, including stage-structured population growth, macroparasitic infection dynamics, the evolution of disease virulence, the population biology of bacterial plasmids, the evolution of temperate phage, and insect resistance management. In addition, there are major modifications to the module on age-structured population growth, which now includes graphical inputs via a life-cycle diagram, allowing demographic projections to be initiated in multiple formats, and interchanged between them.
Along with these content additions, we have reconfigured the Populus help system for access via Adobe Acrobat Reader. This improves graphics and equation formatting, and makes it much easier for Populus users to print help-screen pages.
Populus 5.3 also fixes a few display issues with the Java implementation of Windows XP.
Populus 5.3 is provided in two languages; select Populus53Installer.zip for the English-language edition, and Populus53InstallerEsp.zip for an edition with Spanish-language help screens for those models where a translation has been completed.
Populus 5.2.1 for Java on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Unix:
Our BIOSCI computer at the University of Minnesota distributed 9,600 downloads of Populus 5.2 and 5.2.1 between February and September, 2003. We will continue to offer this superceded version until we are comfortable that version 5.3 is completely stable.
Populus 3.42 for DOS:
Populus 3.42 is a 1998 recompile of the most widely used DOS Populus. Almost all of the models in 3.42 are now incorporated in Populus 5.3, which also contains many new models that were never available under DOS. We continue to post this old program only as a service to people running “legacy” machines.
