2006 Undergraduate Research Symposium



Lisa Hoang (left) —  “Accurate Quantitation of Gene Transcript and Copy Number in Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants Using Quantitative PCR.” Lisa is shown with Plant Biology faculty members Fumiaki Katagiri (her mentor) and Jane Glazebrook. Katherine Paulis — “Using Yeast Mutants to Study Plant Na+ and K+ Transporters.” Katherine is shown above with her Plant Biology faculty mentor John Ward and Research Associate Anke Reinders. She is shown below with proud parents Colleen and Terry Paulus.








Dina Dobraca — “ Genetic Screen for Secretion Mutants in Chlamydomonas: Creating and Testing Constructs.” Dina carried out her research in the laboratory of Plant Biology Faculty member Tony Sanderfoot. In this photograph, she is shown with her poster and Microbiology Professor Dana Davis.

 


Kevin Dorn — “Testing the Causal Effects of Circadian Rhythm on Plant Competitive Ability.” Kevin’s research mentor was Plant Biology faculty member Cynthia Weinig. Kevin participated in three consecutive University of Minnesota Undergraduate Research Symposia. His first poster (2005) presented the results of research performed in the laboratory of David Marks. This poster is Kevin’s second, and he presented a third poster at the 2007 Symposium describing the results of additional work with Dr. Weinig on the effects of circadian rhythm on the competitive ability of Arabidopsis plants.

 



Jennifer Ellingson — “Analysis of Plant Vacuole Antiporters.” Jennifer is shown here with her research Mentor, Plant Biology Associate Professor John Ward. Jennifer isolated vacuolar membrane proteins from wheat roots and Arabidopsis plants. The wheat proteins exhibited sucrose/H+ antiporter activity, but no Na+/H+ or K+/H+ antiporter activity, whereas the Arabidopsis proteins exhibited Na+/H+ and K+/H+ antiporter activity, but no sucrose/H+ antiporter activity.
