American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Description: The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) welcomes applications for the Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship. Alexander & Lydia Anderson Fellowship

Description: Students must be registered for credit in the University of Minnesota Graduate School at the time of application. Applicants must designate either the Anderson or Crosby competition. Alexander Anderson and Lydia Anderson Fellowship is a summer fellowship stipend of up to $3,000, and/or research grant of up to $3,000 for students in the plant or animal sciences- e.g., animal sciences, ecology, forestry, and plant pathology- with preference given to students involved in basic research.

American Society of Plant Taxomomists (ASPT)
Latest announced deadline: 4 March 2003
Support is available for students (both master's and doctoral levels) conducting field work, herbarium travel, and/or laboratory research in any area of plant systematics. ASPT Graduate Student Research Awards do not include support for institutional overhead or stipends. No award will exceed $1000; it is unlikely that proposals from previous recipients will be funded. Proposals will be funded on the basis of merit, regardless of the research area within systematics (e.g., if all of the best proposals emphasize field work, grants will only be made in that area).

BSA Kerling Graduate Student Research Award

The purpose of this award is to support and promote graduate student research in the botanical sciences. To be eligible, one must be a member of the Botanical Society of America (BSA), a registered full-time graduate student, have a faculty research advisor who is also a member of BSA, and not have won the award previously. Charles J. Brand Fellowship

Description: This award is open to graduate students doing study/research in the botanical sciences. The Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program

Description: The program is a collaboration among Canon U.S.A., Inc., the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the US National Park Service. Thanks to a generous commitment by Canon U.S.A., Inc., the program will be awarding eight US$78,000 scholarships to Ph.D. students throughout the Americas to conduct research critical to conserving the national parks of the region. Research projects in the biological, physical, social and cultural sciences are eligible, as well as projects in a new category — technology innovation in support of conservation science. Community Genetics Research and Travel Grants

Description: The Minnesota Center for Community Genetics, a research training group including students and faculty from the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences and the College of Biological Sciences, invites graduate students to submit (1) research proposals for projects that address both the genetics and ecological dynamics of multi-species interactions, and (2) travel requests.

Community of Scholars Program (COSP/Univeristy of Minnesota

Description: The Community of Scholars Program (COSP) has travel grants available for students actively participating in COSP. To continue the process of professional development for all graduate and professional students who participate in the program, up to $1,000 per student is budgeted by COSP for students to present a paper at a national or international conference or workshop. Priority will be given to first-time applications. A second award may be funded at 75% of an initial grant award. A third award may be funded at 50% of the initial award.

Carolyn M. Crosby Fellowship

Description: Available to promising graduate students or, in rare instances, to advanced undergraduate students engaged in field-based plant biology investigation. May be used for independent field research or study at a field facility such as the Lake Itasca Forestry and Biological Station. Up to four awards. Summer stipend: Up to $3,000 and/or research grant of up to $3,000.

CFANS (College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Sciences) Fellowship
Deadline: changes each year
This fellowship will provide support for a mid-program Ph.D. student for one semester (stipend, tuition and health).  The nominated student must be advised by a faculty member in CFANS (Plant Biology Faculty are a part of CFANS).   Eligible students must have passed the preliminary oral examination, completed 24 thesis credits and registering for one credit. This award can be used in either Fall ’07 or Spring ’08.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

Description: The Department of Defense solicits applications for National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships for study and research leading to doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean, and engineering sciences. The DOD will award approximately 90 new three-year graduate fellowships for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study. The Department of Energy/Computation Science Graduate Fellowship

Description: The Department of Energy provides the Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program, administered by the Krell Institute, to support highly capable students pursuing graduate study at US universities in scientific or engineering disciplines with applications in high-performance computing. Fellows also participate in off-campus research at DOE laboratories. Annual stipend is $28,000, plus payment of tuition and fees, and is renewable for up to four years. Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
Deadline: Late fall
Description: The purpose of the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship (DDF) program is to give outstanding final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making timely progress toward the degree--typically those entering their fifth year of graduate study--an opportunity to complete the dissertation within the upcoming academic year by devoting full-time effort to the research and writing of the dissertation. Candidates must be nominated by their graduate program's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to an all-University competition. Up to 50 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are awarded annually.

Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Biological Sciences/National Sciences Foundation
Deadline: usually in November each year
Description: The National Science Foundation Directorate for Biological Sciences invites applications for Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research in order to improve the overall quality of the research, to allow doctoral candidates to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings away from the home campus, and to provide opportunities for greater diversity in collecting and creativity in analyzing data than would be possible using only locally available resources. Proposals whose focus falls within the scope of any program in the Division of Environmental Biology (DEB), or the Animal Behavior or Ecological and Evolutionary Physiology programs in the Division of Integrative Biology and Neuroscience (IBN) are eligible. Grants are typically awarded for 24 months and for amounts that range from $3,000 to $12,000. Environmental Leadership Program

Description: The Environmental Leadership Program offers the Environmental Leadership Fellowships, as part of ELP's highly experiential and innovative national initiative that aims to build the leadership capacity of the environmental movement's most promising emerging professionals. Each year, a new class of 20-30 fellows is chosen to receive intensive training, institutional support, and mentoring for a three-year period. Fellows gain access to funding to pursue further skill training and develop new projects. Applicants must commit to participating in four retreats. ELP will provide $2,000 participation stipend, travel and accommodations for training retreats, as well as $1,000-$10,000 to support leadership-building activities and projects. Description: The Friends of the Earth invite applications for Internships and Paid Fellowships. Friends of the Earth, an international nonprofit environmental advocacy organization, offers internships and fellowships to college and graduate students with an interest in environmental issues to work in its Washington, D.C. offices. GCA/Summer Environmental Studies

Description: Each year the GCA Awards for Summer Environmental Studies provide financial aid toward summer studies doing fieldwork or research in the environmental field. The awards offer students who have demonstrated a keen interest in the betterment of the environment an opportunity for further study in the field of ecology. With these scholarships, young men and women can pursue summer programs beyond the regular course of study to gain additional knowledge and experience. Work may award academic credit but should be in addition to required courses. College students may apply for these awards to pursue study following their freshman, sophomore, or junior year. Every year several students are awarded amounts usually placed at $1500 for each recipient.

Description: Annual grants of $8000 to support study and research in ecological restoration as well as advance knowledge and increase the numbers of scientists in this field. GCA/Summer Scholarship in Field Botany

Description: Annually, the award of $1500 provides financial aid toward summer studies to encourage study in pure botany. It addresses the need to promote the study of field botany to the horticulture public and increase the awareness of the importance of botany to horticulture. With this scholarship, young men and women who have demonstrated a keen interest in botany can pursue studies specifically related to field botany. It does not support time spent on research and lab work. The summer projects can be pursued beyond the regular course of study to gain additional knowledge and experience. Global Change Education Program/ Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships (GREF)
Deadline: Usually February
Description: The GREF program began in June 1999 to support graduate students in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research-funded collaborative global change research at universities and national laboratories. All qualified students are encouraged to apply, but minority and female students are particularly encouraged. The fellowship program makes three-year appointments, renewable annually, and pays an annual stipend of $19,200 ($1,500 monthly plus a $600 Research Education Supplement in March and October), and tuition and fees. Graduate students selected for GREF are encouraged to participate in the SURE 2004 orientation and research focus sessions. If you decide to participate, GREF will pay transportation, per diem and lodging. Applicants must have completed their first year in graduate school, unless they have participated previously in SOARS or SURE. Applicants are required to complete the application form, and submit a five-page description of proposed research, letters of recommendation from the two mentors and an outside individual, and undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

Philip C. Hamm Memorial Scholarship Program

Description: Two nonrenewable scholarships of $1500 each are available to graduate students in the plant sciences and related disciplines from the Philip C. Hamm Memorial Scholarship Program. To be eligible for nomination, a student must have: 1) completed a minimum of one academic year in the University of Minnesota Graduate School, 2) registration during the current academic year, and 3) demonstrate promise as a research scientist through original research.

Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellowships in Biological Sciences

Description: The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program on Risk Analysis for Introduced Species and Genotypes (ISG-IGERT) seeks applicants for entering the program in Fall 2008, supported by the National Science Foundation. The program educates Ph.D. students to conduct research to improve Ecological Risk Analysis and contribute workable solutions to policy questions and problems affecting management of introduced species and genotypes. Description: The Link Foundation invites applications for the Energy Fellowship Program. Molecular Plant Genetics Institute (MPGI) Travel Awards

Description: MPGI has travel awards available to students (and postdocs) in PMGI labs of up to $500/year for travel to meetings or for special training. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Students should send a letter to the PMGI director stating the meeting/training to be attended, dates of meeting/training, and costs of meeting/training. Attach the paper abstract if attending a meeting.

Molecular Plant Genetics Institute (MPGI) Fellowship

Description: For the 2007-08 academic year, MPGI is offering two single-semester Research Assistantships for outstanding third or fourth year Ph.D. candidates working in the areas of microbial or plant genomics. Each stipend will include salary and subsidized health insurance through the graduate assistant plan, plus $2000 for journal subscriptions, scientific society membership dues, lab supplies, or research-related travel. The amount of each award will be based on the prevailing rate of the student's graduate program.

Bernard and Jean Phinney Graduate Fellowship in Plant Molecular Biology

Description: The fellowship is awarded for one semester. The fellowship award will include a stipend at the graduate fellowship level for the semester, as well as tuition and fringe benefits. One award will be made. Concurrently with the Phinney Fellowship, the fellowship recipient may hold up to an additional 25% assistantship, or its equivalent in value, from another source.
