This scholarship is awarded annually to a woman who is a CBS undergraduate with high academic achievement and an interest in plant biology. The award was originally established as a bequest from the estate of Florence Raihle Newcomb.
Ernest C. and Lucy B. Abbe Award (Fund 3704)
This award is made annually to one or more CBS juniors or seniors who demonstrate high academic achievement and research accomplishments in the plant sciences, and who plan to attend graduate school. The award was established in honor of Ernest Abbe, professor of botany at the University of Minnesota from 1935 to 1974, and his wife Lucy.
Bernard and Jean Phinney Graduate Fellowship in Plant Molecular Biology (Fund 2854)
This fellowship supports a Ph.D student whose research exemplifies successful application of plant molecular biological techniques. The recipient may be enrolled in any graduate program, and must be mentored by a Plant Biology faculty member. The award honors the contributions of alumnus Bernard Phinney as an educator and scientific leader in research on plant hormones.
Douglas C. Pratt Lectureship in Plant Molecular Biology (Fund 2968)
This lectureship was recently established to support an annual lecture on the advances of leading-edge research in plant molecular biology and its applications to basic science issues. The lectureship honors the administrative, research and educational contributions of Douglas C. Pratt, Emeritus faculty member in the Department of Plant Biology and former department head. Dr. Pratt’s research emphasized photomorphogenesis and also biomass crops for biofuels.
John Hall Memorial Research Fund in Evolutionary Plant Sciences (Fund 2649)
This fund supports awards to CBS faculty for research in plant or fungal evolutionary biology. John Hall, a faculty member in the Botany Department for over three decades in the mid-20th century, is remembered for his contributions to paleobotany.
Plant Biology Centennial Fund (Fund 2850)
This fund was established in 1989 through gifts from faculty, alumni and friends of the Department of Plant Biology in celebration of 100 years of plant biology and botany at the University of Minnesota.
