Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories

Home of the headwaters of the Mississippi River, Itasca is the starting point for more than a major waterway. It’s also a vast natural laboratory that has provided inspiration for generations of students as they start down the path to becoming biologists.

Students and researchers from around the world study diverse organisms in undisturbed habitats across three ecosystems: coniferous forest, eastern deciduous forest and tall grass prairie. They are immersed in courses ranging from botany and ecology to molecular biology and neuroscience at Itasca. It’s the quintessential experience for biologists at the University of Minnesota where many students have their first exposure to designing and completing independent research projects.

“I just can’t get over how great [Itasca]
was and how much I want to go back.”

Here are some of the academic programs offered at the field station:

  • The Nature of Life program, an intensive three-day introduction to the College of Biological Sciences for first-year students.
  • A comprehensive program in field biology for advanced undergraduates and graduates.
  • The Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Program for underrepresented minorities and other highly qualified undergraduate students to receive instruction and conduct research with a faculty member in molecular techniques and the neurosciences.
  • A two-week summer program for new graduate students in molecular and cellular biology to prepare for their respective graduate research programs in biology.
  • An internationally recognized program for graduate students in the neurosciences.
  • The Itasca Science Teachers Institute, which brings modern scientific methods into the high school classrooms of northern.
  • An exchange program with a field station in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and with universities in other countries.
