Biotechnology Institute celebrates 20th anniversaryBiotech people.

Pictured are the deans and directors who have guided the Biotechnology Institute since its inception. From left to right are Michael Flickinger, the first BTI director; Dean Bob Elde; Ken Valentas, current BTI director; former CBS dean Pete Magee (front center); founding dean Richard Caldecott; and Victor Bloomfield, dean of the Graduate School and former head of the biochemistry department. Caldecott and Bloomfield proposed the concept for BTI to the legislature and were awarded $300,000 for the first year. MNBIO was created through BTI in 1991.

The Biotechnology Institute was created in the mid 1980s with funding from the Minnesota Legislature to support the growth of Minnesota's biotechnology industry. The institute launched a year-long celebration of its 20th anniversary at the annual Fall BTI Dinner, which was held in the Cargill Building for Microbial and Plant Genomics on the St. Paul campus. The BTI dinners, held twice yearly, provide opportunities for people from biotech companies and the University to meet and discuss topics of mutual interest. BTI is planning a two-day anniversary celebration on June 10 and 11, featuring a symposium and other
activities. The event is open to alumni, students, and industry members.
