Internship: Professional experience in biological sciences

Course information

  • Matches student’s academic or career goals with opportunities in industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies
  • Variable 1-6 credits, [4 credits may apply toward major]
  • S/N grading
  • Internships may be paid, unpaid, or stipend-based
  • Position must be biology-related (in the broadest sense)
  • Students may enroll multiple times

Course requirements

  • Learning objectives agreed upon by student, site supervisor, and faculty instructor
  • A minimum of 150 hours over at least 10 weeks in the position—the more credits the more hours are required
  • Internship should not include more than 20% repetitive-type work (e.g., data entry)
  • Weekly journal
  • Reflective paper: an end-of-term paper evaluating the experience, achievements, and learning, and how the internship impacts career planning and goals
  • Individualized additional requirements depending on the student’s particular situation. These may include presentation at undergraduate research symposium, research paper, feasibility study, presentations to other classes, informational interviews
