General computer support

CBS Information Technology (CBS IT) provides support for University-owned computers and software within CBS.

Who do I talk to for help with my email?

1-HELP will handle the vast majority of email related issues. Please contact 1-HELP at 612-301-4357 about your email related issues before contacting CBS IT staff.

What kind of computer hardware support does CBS IT provide?

CBS IT offers very limited hardware support. We will help make an initial diagnosis of hardware problems. If hardware failure is diagnosed, it is up to the individual to arrange repairs, however we may be able to help facilitate such repairs. We can also perform some basic hardware installation support on a case by case basis but do not assume liability if it voids the computer’s warranty or damages the computer in any way.

What about support for my personally owned computer that I use at work?

We cannot for reasons of liability and policy support computer software or hardware not clearly owned by the University.

What about software like word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics programs?

Every lab and department office should designate one person as their local computer support person. This person should make an attempt to install new software. If they run into problems with the installation, then we will work with them to help finish the installation. Most software today is as easy to install as reading the first few pages of the installation manual and inserting the required media. It usually requires very little technical knowledge to install new software packages.
