Connecting to an Active Directory share

Activate your AD account

Step 1 screenshot

If it has not already been done, please activate your AD account. To do this, go to www.umn.edu/dirtools, sign in, and click on “Active Directory Account Options” at the bottom of the page under the heading “Other Accounts.” Agree to the terms by checking the boxes at the bottom of the page and click “Submit.”

Choose your operating system:

Windows computers enrolled in Active Directory (AD)

Windows computers enrolled in the AD have the advantage of their group share being mounted automatically as the S: drive, listed under My Computer. If you need permission to access one of these folders within the Groups share please have the owner of that share email cbshelp@umn.edu. For example, if you want access to the LAB-jdoe01 share you would have the PI John Doe email cbshelp@umn.edu or call x59284.

Windows XP computers not enrolled in Active Directory (AD)

Step 2b screenshot

Windows-based computers not enrolled in Active Directory will need to download and install the Windows x500 Kerberos Authentication Pack from an account with administrative access. The package enables your computer to use your X500 logon and password to access the AD share.

Step 2

Step 3 screenshot

In the menu bar select Tools and then Map Network Drive.

Step 3

Step 4 screenshot

In the pull down box next to “Drive:” select “S:” or if it is not displayed, another drive letter of your choice. Next to “Folder:” type “\\cbs.ad.umn.edu\cbs$\Groups\” (without quotes)

Step 4

Step 5 screenshot

At the logon prompt, enter your X500 followed by @UMN.EDU in uppercase. For instance if your X500 logon was jdoe01 then you would enter jdoe01@UMN.EDU. Enter your regular X500 password, not your enterprise password. The regular X500 password you want to enter is the same password you would use to access your email via webmail.

Step 5

Step 6 screenshot

From My Computer, click on your newly mounted drive and you should see a list of folders named for departments and projects. Select the folder you wish to access to view the shared content. Other folders that you have not been granted access to will not be accessible. If you need permission to access one of these folders within the Groups share please have the owner of that share email cbshelp@umn.edu. For example, if you want access to the LAB-jdoe01 share you would have the PI John Doe send an email to cbshelp@umn.edu or call x59284.
