Mapping a Network Drive to the Transfer Server on your Windows XP PC

  1. Double click the My Computer icon.

  2. Choose Tools and then Map Network Drive.

  3. In the Drive pulldown menu, select an available drive letter.

  4. In the Folder field, type \\160.94.173.214\share1

  5. Make sure Reconnect at logon is checked so that the next time your computer is rebooted, it will automatically connect to Transfer.

  6. Click the link "different user name." In the "User name" field, type transfer, and in the "Password" field, type transfer.
  7. Click OK and then Finish. A new window will open, showing the contents of the Transfer server. If you do not already have a folder in the root directory, choose File, New and then Folder. Rename the folder. To speed up access to your unique folder in the future, you can right click on your folder, and then choose Send To and then Desktop (create shortcut). This places an icon on your desktop which will point directly to your Transfer folder.

  8. To access the entire Transfer server directory during future sessions, open up My Computer and double click on the share1 on '160.94.173.214' icon.

The Purpose of the Transfer Server is NOT FOR LONG-TERM STORAGE of your data. Please remove your files as soon as possible after transfer to your own system so that others can use the space. Files left on the space for over 30 days will be deleted. If you need longer-term storage, please contact Imaging Center staff for information on how to set up your U of M NetFiles account.

DO NOT PLACE FILES IN THE ROOT DIRECTORY OF THE TRANSFER SERVER; INSTEAD, PLACE THEM IN YOUR USER FOLDER. Each user is allowed one folder (with unlimited subfolders) on the Transfer server.
