Usage Policies

Q:?Who decides on the policies for the instructional equipment?

A: The general policies for this equipment are set by the CBS Computing Committee and the Information Technology Fee Committee which is composed of 3 CBS faculty and 3 CBS undergraduates. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please fill out an application form in CBS Student Services, 223 Sndyer Hall.

Q:?Who can use the equipment?

A: The equipment can be reserved by CBS faculty, staff and students with this priority: CBS courses until one week before the semester begins, Other instructional use on a first-come, first-serve basis, (eg. occasional seminars) Individuals wishing to use the equipment for non-instructional purposes (eg. lab meetings, research seminars) may only make a reservation no more than one week in advance to ensure maxiumum availability for instuctional purposes.

Q:?How do I make a reservation?

A: Contact avhelp@cbs.umn.edu or at 4-3454. Be sure in your email or voicemail to include; the start and end times of your desired reservation, your name, phone number and email address. A reply will be sent back when the reservation has been made.

Technical

Q: Who do I contact for support?

A: Problems can be reported to avhelp@cbs.umn.edu or call 4-3454.

Q: I would like to use my own laptop when presenting and am in a general purpose classoom that has projection equipment..

A: For newly renovated classoms, the directions can be viewed on the web. For older classrooms, see the specific directions on the classroom web site.

Basically for a newly renovated classroom:

  1. plug computer into the laptop connection (VGA will work with all Windows and all the newer Macs; Mac connection for the older Macs) and plug in theethernet connection
  2. turn on the projector (control on the podium simply requires you to press the button of what you are using: laptop vs. VCR vs. laser disk player)
  3. turn on your laptop
  4. Mac should come up projecting to both laptop and screen; Windows computers need you to choose the mode by using the Fxn key and the F key that has the picture of the monitor on it (usually the F5 key... but varies with some laptops). That key "triple toggles" from laptop screen to projector screen to both screen.
  5. the ethernet connection is DHCP so you just need to set your computer to have the DHCP server get the IP address. You should register your computer with OIT for DHCP access
  6. Complete and simple (yea!!!) instructions for registration AND for setting your computer up for DHCP access are at that site. Once you have it set, you can go anywhere on campus and connect your laptop to any etherjack and be up and running. Cool.
  7. When you are done, you must hold down the projector OFF button for a second or two for it to actually turn it off (prevents accidental turn offs during class just because your hand brushed the button)

Q: I would like to connect to the Internet during my presentation.

A: The Ethernet connection is DHCP so you need to set your computer to have the DHCP server get the IP address. You should register your computer with OIT for DHCP access.

Miscellaneous
