Where did you transfer from?

As a post-secondary student, I enrolled in classes at Anoka Ramsey Community College for my last two years in high school.

Why did you want to come to the University of Minnesota?

I had completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and planned on getting a four-year degree. The University of Minnesota and specifically the College of Biological Sciences seemed like a good fit.

What are you researching?

We are researching the protein twisted gastrulation (TWSG1). TWSG1 is a secreted protein that binds to and modulates BMP signaling. We set out to elucidate the possible role that TWSG1 plays in breast cancer by investigating the effects of over-expression in various mammary cell lines using techniques such as qPCR, flow cytometry, and morphometrics. Understanding regulators such as TWSG1 is key to further understanding the complex role BMPs play in cancer progression. This could be particularly beneficial one day for the development of novel treatments for profiles that are hard to target such as triple-negative breast cancers.

What have you gotten out of this experience?

There was a large learning curve when I first jumped into the project, as was expected. It has definitely prepared me for the demanding level of focus and mental performance associated with research and likely any position related to my field of study. I've learned many valuable skills and developed a working knowledge of research in academia. I've determined that I do not want to commit to more education immediately following graduation despite such a great experience working under my mentor.

What are you interests outside of school?

The most passionate interest that I have outside of school is snowboarding.

Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?

I have met some friends in the Ski and Snowboard Club, and I go on a couple of trips with the club every year. I also like to attend events and lectures hosted by the Genetics, Cell Biology and Development Club.

What are you plans for the future?

I plan to look for a job related to my field following graduation. I would like to get a job somewhere in industry before possibly returning to school.
