Where did you transfer from?

University of Miami

Why did you want to come to the University?

I wanted to pursue research opportunities; specifically, ones that pertain to genetic diseases in children. I also enjoy living in a place that has seasons and snow, and I wanted to live closer to my extended family.

What are you researching?

We are researching the p53 gene locus and its effects on the upregulation in breast cancer. Specifically, we are looking at how the PVT-1 gene splicing occurs in breast cancer cells and comparing it to gene splicing in wild-type cells. We examine how the splicing patterns differ, and tyr to determine possible mechanisms for the patterns we observe.

What have you gotten out of this experience?

So far, I have already learned a great deal about scientific writing, the process of working on a research project, and the role of gene regulation in the development of cancer. My research mentor has made sure that I understand all the concepts behind what we are doing and has welcomed any questions that I have. This experience will guide my future research pursuits and help my transition from an undergraduate degree to an M.D./Ph.D. program.

What are your interests outside of school?

I am interested in learning more about holistic health and how it can be integrated into our current medical system. I am currently enrolled in the University’s Holistic Health and Healing class to help broaden my experience in this field. I also enjoy singing and playing both the flute and piano, as well as participating in different events held on campus.

Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?

I am a member of Alpha Gamma Delta and plan on joining the pre-osteopathic student organization here on campus. During the summer, I work as a swimming instructor.

What are you plans for the future?

I am currently studying genetics and hope to go to medical school after I graduate. I plan on continuing doing research and volunteering at hospitals with the rest of my time at the University of Minnesota.
