Undergraduate Programs
Ecologists study the evolutionary adaptations of plants and animals to the environment. The ecological perspective encompasses the growth and maintenance of populations and their interactions in communities, and the interrelationships among organisms and physical events in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The behavioral biology perspective deals with adaptations to the environment, mechanisms of behavior, and the evolution of social systems.
The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior participates in teaching
the core curriculum in biology and offers an undergraduate major in ecology,
evolution, and behavior. For information on the undergraduate major, please
contact an advisor in the Collge of Biological Sciences Office
of Student Services. The EEB Director of Undergraduate Studies is Professor
James Cotner.
In addition to general requirements for graduation from the College of Biological
Sciences, EEB students must complete a set of additional requirements. More information on undergraduate degrees in CBS is available at the online Undergraduate Catalog.
The following specialized undergraduate progams are available through the department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior:
- Honors Program: The
nucleus of the program is directed research in biology, the most significant
and challenging experience the faculty can offer to qualified undergraduates.
- Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Program: There are several similar
but slightly different summer research programs within Life Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Applicants are recruited from colleges and universities
throughout the world.
- Headwaters Ecology Club: The Ecology Club was established in 1991 to bring together
students interested in the ecological and environmental problems of the world.
- Ecological Research Interns at Cedar Creek: The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program
at the Unviersity of Minnesota has openings for undergraduate students to
work as research interns.
