David Tilman has been appointed Regents Professor of the University of Minnesota. He will be awarded the Regents medallion at the board's June 14 meeting. This is a real tribute to Dave and to the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, which has had two other recipients of this, the University's highest faculty honor. It also adds to Dave's growing list of distinctions, which now includes the National Academy of Sciences as well as the McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Ecology.

Craig Packer, has received a five-year grant of $1,482,000 from the National Science Foundation for his research project "Viral Transmission Dynamics in the Serengeti."

David Tilman has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences.

Hats off to Tony Dean, whose promotion to Associate Professor with tenure was approved by the Regents at their April meeting.

Ruth Shaw has won a Guggenheim Fellowship Award for her sabbatical in 2002-3. Her proposal was entitled "Evolutionary consequences of fragmentation".

Congratulations to Tony Starfield, new recipient of the University of Minnesota's Award for Contributions to Postbaccalaureate, Graduate and Professional Education.

Dave Tilman, has received a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a program to encourage minority participation in ecological research and training.

Craig Packer and Anna Bosacker, have been awarded $11,655 from the Leakey Foundation for "Physiological Stress and Patterns of Competition and Cooperation in Baboons."

Anne Pusey and Lilian Pintea, have been awarded $13,720 from the Leakey Foundation for "How Has Vegetation Change Influenced Grouping Patterns of Gombe Chimpanzees?"

Kudos to Prof. Robert Sterner, who was recently awarded $34,290 from the National Park Service for "Ecology effects of leafy spurge infestation and control in Theodore Roosevelt National Park."

Congratulations to Dr. Karen Oberhauser who was awarded $438,651 from NSF for "Monarch Butterfly Larval Monitoring: A Nationwide Citizen Science Initiative".

Prof. Craig Packer, was quoted in a Sept 18., New York Times article on the altruistic and heroic behavior of people in response to the World Trade Center disaster.

Eli Bridge, EEB graduate student of Prof. William Schmid received a $500 research grant award from the Animal Behavior Society.

A celebration of the life of Professor Frank McKinney will be held September 8 at the Bell Museum of Natural History, 10 Church St. SE, Minneapolis. Refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m., program at 8:00 p.m.

A reception to honor Arlene Fosdick's retirement as Administrative Director in EEB will be held in the Ecology Building lobby area on Friday, September 28, at 2:00 p.m.

Prof. Tony Dean of the Biotechnology Institute, received an award of $267,609 from the NIH/National Institute of General Medical Science for "The Evolution of Specialists and Generalists" and $278,076 for "Evolution of a Dehydrogenase in its Adaptive Landscape."
