Study System: Arctic Tundra
Degrees Held: B.A. Biology, Middlebury College, 2003
Year of Entry into Program: 2003
Statement: My broad research interests are in ecosystem ecology and how geologic processes affect ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling. My interest in biogeochemical cycles began when I completed the Semester of Environmental Science at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. Sarah Hobbie and Jacques Finlay are my co-advisors. My dissertation examines the mechanisms behind landscape patterns in fluxes of carbon from tundra to aquatic systems by investigating the effects of variations in glaciation history on organic matter processing. My study relies on field sampling in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range near Toolik Lake , AK and laboratory experiments. I will be modeling tundra carbon and nutrient cycling for the last chapter of my thesis. Past work I have done includes snail behavior, nitrification/denitrification on Cape Cod, and decomposition in a forested wetland in Vermont.
