Will I be Admitted?
The decision to admit an applicant is complex and is based on the academic record, standardized test scores, references, research experience, the statement of purpose, and the correspondence of student and faculty interests. Because many elements of this process are non-quantitative, it is impossible to gauge application prospects precisely, but rough comparisons can be made with the objective GRE scores and grades of our currently enrolled students. For our current Ph.D. students, the average Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical GRE scores are 602 + 105, 719 + 72, and 4.9 + 1.0, and the mean undergraduate Grade Point Average is 3.62 + 0.37 (mean + one standard deviation).
A test of proficiency in the English language is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of U.S. citizenship status. The sole exemption concerns those applicants who have completed 16 semester credits (24 quarter credits) within the past 24 months in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the U.S. or other English-speaking country. The minimum scores for admission to the program are given in the table below; all English language test scores are valid for up to two years.
