EEB graduate students are often employed as teaching assistants or
research assistants. EEB Ph.D. students who enter the program with a first year Graduate School Fellowship and
who remain in good standing have guaranteed support for four years, typically in the form of teaching or research
assistantships in addition to the Graduate School Fellowships. Support beyond four years for Ph.D. students making
adequate progress has been available in the past. Other Ph.D. students and M.S students are typically supported on a
combination of teaching and research assistantships. In addition, many students obtain funding through successful
fellowship or grant applications, or through research assistantships.
Incoming graduate students in the EEB program often obtain a Graduate School Fellowship.
Prospective students are nominated by the EEB Graduate Program to a University-wide competition. Recipients of the
fellowship for the 2006-2007 academic year (9 months) receive a stipend of $21,500, plus full tuition and comprehensive
health insurance and dental care. Deadline for 2007-08 fellowships is January 26, 2007.
Final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making outstanding and timely progress towards their degree can be nominated by
the DGS for a Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. Nomination deadline is March 14, 2008 for the
2008-09 academic year. Recipients receive a stipend of $22,000 for the academic year plus full tuition for thesis credits
and comprehensive health insurance and dental insurance. Students should consult with their advisors and inform the DGS
by early December if they wish to be nominated. Since the number of nominations is limited, an internal competition will
decide which students will be nominated.
The University of Minnesota maintains a web site that lists

University of Minnesota grants.
The Graduate School has a scholarship Web site that lists grants
and scholarships for graduate students at the University of Minnesota. This list includes
Endowed Fellowships that are supported by endowed income from wills, trusts, and gifts from organizations or
individuals. Applications for endowed fellowships are available on the Graduate School's website
http://www.grad.umn.edu/fellowships/endowed/index.html
for the 2008-09 academic year. Recipients are expected to register in the Graduate School during the tenure of the award.
