Student Life

Workshop at Lake Itasca for new graduate students and BMBB Annual Retreat.

Incoming BMBB graduate students attend a 10-day workshop taught by faculty prior to the beginning of the fall semester at the University's Lake Itasca Biology Research Station. Lake Itasca is located about 200 miles north from the Twin Cities and provides an idyllic natural setting in which students gain hands-on experience in the laboratory and become acquainted with student colleagues and faculty members.

BMBB has an annual retreat, which is usually held in October. All first year graduate students participate and many of the more senior students attend. Individual faculty members of all four divisions give talks on their research and students are encouraged to present their data in poster sessions. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the research in the department and to socialize with fellow students and faculty.
