Biology Program

Rick Peifer

Rick Peifer is Assistant Director of the General Biology Program at the University of Minnesota. He has been an instructor and laboratory coordinator for the Program for twenty-five years.

During the past ten years he has been the principle investigator of a multimedia project to enhance and improve the quality of undergraduate instruction in large biology courses, both in lecture and lab. The project has received internal and external funding in excess of $350,000. The project has resulted in the creation of a customized database of approximately 8000 computer graphics, animations, and QuickTime movies for teaching introductory biology.

In addition, the project created its own multimedia presentation (UPresent) and database (UGather) software, available free to all students, staff, and faculty at the University of Minnesota (www.umn.edu/upresent). Peifer also received a $300,000 grant from the Minnesota Legislature through the Dept. of Children, Families, and Learning to help distribute UGather and UPresent to Minnesota educational institutions, and to offer multimedia workshops for high school biology teachers.
