BIOL 1105 serves as an introductory course to the Biology, Society, and Environment (BSE) major, but is open to any interested student. The course uses a case-study approach to examine the social context of biology and the relevance and impact of biology to social and environmental issues. We use a mixed teaching format that combines introductory lectures and discussions, analysis of popular media, and student-led discussions, presentations, and debates. The emphasis is on engaging the student: we immerse the student in the subject matter and expect active participation and adequate preparation.
