BIOL 1001: Introductory Biology I: Evolutionary & Ecological Perspectives

Biology is an enormous field, and during this course we focus on several themes that are central to modern biology. The syllabus has been chosen to build a strong foundation for understanding the process and outcome of organic evolution. Whether the students has career goals in biology or would simply like to have a better appreciation of our place in the natural world, the concepts studied are a good place to begin.

The major goals of the course are to help the student:

  • Build a framework of knowledge within the major themes of the course
  • View biology as a set of organizing principles, rather than a collection of facts, that reveals the unity and diversity of nature
  • Identify and understand ways that biological processes and technology directly impact our lives

BIOL 1001 satisfies the Council of Liberal Education (CLE) laboratory distribution requirement in biology.
