THEORY, RESEARCH, AND IMPLEMENTATION FOR INTRODUCTORY MICROBIOLOGY
Submitted: June 2008
Abstract
This paper examines the theory and research of problem-based learning. The effectiveness of this approach is based on several educational theories that active learning in contextual framework develops knowledge, problem-solving skills, and meta-cognition. Studies show that problem-based learning students are equivalent to traditional approach students on basic knowledge examinations. Problem-based learning students may show better clinical problem-solving, use resources more frequently, and have higher student satisfaction.
Furthermore this paper will examine the use of problem-based learning in undergraduate science courses and other disciplines. Review of literature on implementation of problem-based learning for undergraduate science courses will lead to curricular proposal for use in introductory microbiology course.
