WHAT IS BIOLOGY COLLOQUIUM?

Biology Colloquium (BCQ) is a student-run class designed to introduce students interested in the biological sciences to a wide range of fields within the general area of biology. This class allows students to interact with other students interested in biology, meet faculty in many areas, get insights into classes that they will be taking, find out about research opportunities open to them, and make the University a smaller place. BCQ offers many different class opportunities such as:

Large Group Seminars
Students meet biweekly for a seminar given by a faculty member or a local researcher involved in industry. During the semester, a wide range of topics in biology are covered.

Small Group Seminars
On the alternating weeks, students meet in groups of 5 - 7 students to tour research laboratories, hospitals, industrial facilities and the like. These small groups are facilitated by student leaders who were previous Colloquium students.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Students are given the opportunity to register for an additional credit and do a research project with a faculty member of their choice. This often becomes the stepping-stone to further research opportunities.

Trips to the Itasca Forestry and Biology Station
Every semester students are given the opportunity to take an informative and relaxing weekend trip to the University's field station at Itasca State Park. This is a great opportunity to meet new friends and learn about field biology, and simply have a good time and enjoy the outdoors.

Social Opportunities
Every semester the Colloquium fields one or several intramural sports teams; be it football, volleyball, broomball, or softball, students become better acquainted outside the classroom. Other social events are also planned such as movie night, an ice cream social, etc.
