The following is a listing of persons earning MS and PhD degrees through the graduate program in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics at the University of Minnesota. The date column contains the date of the thesis defense examination. The name of the major advisor is given in parentheses. The academic year is defined as 9/1 through 8/31. Dates in brackets indicate official University of Minnesota Degree Award date.

    2001-2002 Academic Year
    Name Date Thesis Comments
Bell, Jessica Kay 9/25/01 (Banaszak) Structural and biochemical characterization of D-3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase: subunit interface point mutations and truncation mutants Jessica begins a Postdoctoral Associate position at the University of California, San Francisco, with Charly Craik and Robert Fletterick. She will be working on serine proteases doing both biochemical and structural studies.
Hargittai, Michele Renee 9/19/01 (Musier-Forsyth) Mechanism of HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein-mediated tRNA primer annealing Michele is tentatively scheduled to begin a Postdoctoral Associate position at Pennsylvania State University in Dr. Craig Cameron's lab. She will be working on understanding how the RNA-dependant RNA polymerase initiates negative-strand RNA synthesis from the viral RNA plus-strand genome. This minus strand is then used to transcribe progeny genomes.
Jeon, Mili 11/29/01 (Rougvie) Characterization of the heterochronic gene lin-42 and functional studies of the timeless-like gene tim-1 in Caenorhabditis elegans Mili will leave after the first of the year to pursue postdoctoral studies on axon guidance in Drosophila in the lab of Dr. Kai Zinn at Cal Tech.
Martinez-Zayas (Vaz), Betsy 10/8/01 (Wackett, Sadowsky) Characterization, complete nucleotide sequence and organization of Atrazine Catabolic plasmid, pADP-1 from Pseudomonas sp. strain ADP. Betsy accepted a Postdoctoral Associate position with Dr. Arkady Khodursky, University of Minnesota.
Seffernick, Jennifer Lynn 9/12/01 [9/28/01] (Wackett, Sadowsky) Critical amino acids in triazine degrading enzymes: Determining metal binding and reaction specificity Jennifer will begin a joint Postdoctoral Associate position with Dr. Larry Wackett (her doctoral advisor) and Patricia Babbitt at the University of California, San Francisco. She will be studying superfamily structure, evolution and computational modeling.
Wagner, Michelle Lynn 10/26/01 [11/30/01] (Wackett, Sadowsky) Site-directed mutagenesis studies of a manganese II-dependent ring cleavage dioxygenase from Arthrobacter globiformis strain CM-2 Michelle has been offered a Postdoctoral Associate position to study antibiotic resistant Salmonella in collaboration with the USDA at the University of Georgia, under the direction of Dr. John Maurer.
