The BMBB Program only accepts students interested in obtaining a Ph.D. Also, due to the course structure, we only admit for Fall semester.
Background and Required Tests
The BMBB graduate program is flexible enough to accommodate students with a wide variety of educational backgrounds. We encourage applications from students with undergraduate or master's degrees in biological, chemical or physical sciences. International students have greater success being admitted with an M.S. degree. Academic preparation for the Ph.D. degree must include course work in organic chemistry, calculus, and biochemistry. Students are strongly encouraged to complete courses in physics, physical chemistry and/or molecular biology.
Admission Criteria
Admission is determined on the basis of academic record, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal, quantitative and analytical) and personal statement. We highly recommend an advanced GRE test in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, chemistry or biology. Research experience at the master's or undergraduate level and letters of recommendation are also highly considered.
Diversity
The BMBB Graduate Program embraces the University of Minnesotas position that promoting and supporting diversity among the student body is central to the academic mission of the University. We define diversity to encompass many characteristics including economic disadvantage, special talents, evidence of leadership qualities, race or ethnicity, a strong work record, and disability. The BMBB Program is committed to providing equal access to educational opportunities through recruitment, admission, and support programs that promote diversity, foster successful academic experiences, and cultivate the leaders of the next generation.
Application Materials
Apply by December 15 for Admission and Financial Aid. Late applications will be considered as space permits. The application package should include the following materials:
An application to the University of Minnesota Graduate School, including payment of fee. On-line form: Graduate School Application
Required Personal Statement: Please upload your personal statement to the online graduate school application under statement #1. This statement should be no longer than two single-spaced pages and should outline your research interests and career goals, work and research experience, personal background that is pertinent to this application, leadership roles, and qualities that would contribute to diversity of the program. List any research publications on which you are an author at the end of your personal statement. This list is excluded from the 2-page limit. Statement #2: The graduate school application asks for a second statement. This statement is NOT required for MCSB admittance.
Three letters of recommendation are required by the program. Please submit names and email addresses of referees online, with the Graduate School online application form. Letters received through the online Graduate School system are sufficient; they will also be received by the BMBB/MCSB program.
An Admissions Committee reviews all applications during January-March. Top applicants are invited to visit us, meet with our faculty and students and tour our facilities at our expense. We will encourage all interested students to visit us.
Financial Support for Graduate Education
Support for graduate education comes from a variety of sources but is augmented by several NIH and NSF-based training grants.
A competitive stipend and tuition scholarship are awarded to all students admitted to the program.
