Wilmot Lab News [ Back ]

January 2008 : Carrie is currently serving as the 2008 Chair of the Special Interest Group on Biological Macromolecules (BioMac SIG) of the American Crystallographic Association (ACA). BioMac SIG is primarily responsible for representing the interests of SIG members at the ACA General Council, as well as organising BioMac SIG sessions at the annual ACA meetings.

January 2008 : Congratulations from the Wilmot lab to the newly minted Doctor Teresa De la Mora-Rey. Teresa successfully defended her thesis "Crystallographic and Biochemical Studies of Methylamine Dehydrogenase from Paracoccus denitrificans : a Tryptophan Tryptophylquinone containing enzyme" on January 16th. Teresa's family came up from El Paso for the defense. She is looking to move to a postdoctoral position in Texas in the summer.

October 2007: Congratulations to graduate student Teresa de la Mora-Rey on being selected to present her research at the Graduate Student Poster session of the Honeywell Nobel Initiative at the University of Minnesota, which coincided with a lecture by the 2003 Chemistry Nobel Laureate, Dr. Roderick MacKinnon. In addition, she also received one of three poster prizes at the Departmental Retreat.

June 2007: Congratulations from the Wilmot lab to the newly minted Doctor Bryan Johnson. Bryan successfully defended his thesis "Mechanistic characterization of amine oxidases from Hansenula polymorpha by x-ray crystallographic structural studies" on June 1st. Bryan will start a job at R&D Systems in the Twin Cities on June 18th.

Postscript: It should be noted that the bow-tie is courtesy of Bryan's family, who were all present.

May 2007: Carrie's tenure and promotion to Associate Professor has been approved, and will take effect on July 1st 2007.

May 2007: Congratulations to 5th year graduate students Teresa De la Mora-Rey and Bryan Johnson. Teresa has been awarded a 2007 Cyrus Barnum Teaching Award for excellence in teaching assistance during the 2006 Spring offering of Bioc4331, Biochemistry I: Structure, Catalysis, and Metabolism. This is the key entry course into the Biochemistry major at the University of Minnesota. Teresa aspires to become a faculty member at an undergraduate institution. Bryan Johnson has been awarded the 2007 Victor Bloomfield Graduate Fellowship in Molecular Biophysics. This award is given to a student in the Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biophysics graduate program for research excellence in structural biology or biophysics. Bryan aspires to use his graduate training in an industrial / biotechnology setting. Both awards were presented at the annual Departmental banquet following the 2007 Bollum Symposium on May 2nd.

At the same event 1st year graduate students Val Klema and Brandon Goblirsch were honored as the two 2006 3M Fellowship recipients. Val and Brandon were awarded these competitive Biochemistry Graduate Fellowships prior to starting their graduate studies at Minnesota. These awards supplement their stipend throughout their time as graduate students at the U.

April 2007: Carrie is featured in a USA Today news article by science reporter Dan Vergano entitled "Chemists pump iron for answers about life in the universe". Check it out on-line at USA Today's website.

Dec 2006: Read about Carrie in the Winter 2006-2007 issue of BiO, the College of Biological Sciences award winning magazine.

July 2006: Congratulations to 4th year graduate student, Teresa De la Mora-Rey, who won one of the four Pauling Poster Prizes at the American Crystallographic Association (ACA) Annual Meeting in Honolulu, HI. Her poster entitled “X-ray structures of methylamine dehydrogenase reaction intermediates” was chosen from more than 600 poster presentations at the meeting. She received a cash award and a copy of Linus Pauling's "General Chemistry" textbook.

At the same meeting, Carrie was presented with the American Crystallographic Association 2006 Margaret C. Etter Early Career Award by ACA President Bob Bau.

Citation: “In recognition of her outstanding achievements in static and time-resolved structural biology, in the structural foundations of novel cofactors and chromophores in metalloenzymes, in teaching and stimulating interest in crystallography, and in serving as a mentor and role model for students at all levels.”
